Sirogojno

"The open air museum in Sirogojno is the only of the kind in Serbia and Montenegro. The first processes of transfer, rebuilding and reconstruction of Zlatibor cottages to the museum site were realised by the plan of Ranko Findrik, an architect, and the Republic Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments in 1980. The initial idea of the project originated within the Sirogojno organization of domestic works. It was realized later on with the persistence of Dobrila Vasiljević – Smiljanić and engagement of ethnologist Bosa Rosić, republic institutions and other numerous partners. In the course of time, the monumental complex of the St. Apostles Peter and Paul`s church from the 18th century and the open-air museum were placed under legal protection as a cultural asset – a monument of exceptional importance. Within the protected core and for the sake of further preservation and presentation, the institution of Open-air museum was founded in 1992. Today. the Sirogojno Museum is a member of the Related Museums of Europe Association and performes its activities in accordance with ICOM Declaration and basic postulates of European scancenology."
